Anniversary, and an announcement

One year ago today, the airship Jane Guy disappeared without a trace. To date, neither the ship nor her crew have been found. If you feel so moved, we invite you to join us for a moment of silence at 7:14 pm (EST), the time of the Guy's final radio message to the Institute.

~

In less somber news, [Esc.] Laboratory has a new website: WWW.ESC-LABORATORY.COM

As of the end of March, this will be the group's only official presence on the web, so update your bookmarks!

I have another exciting piece of news for fans of [Esc.] Lab (and The Threshold People!) that I hope to be able to announce very soon. Stay tuned!

Literature: A Buyer's Guide to Maps of Antarctica

Clarkesworld Magazine presents, for your reading pleasure, a lovely short story by Catherynne M. Valente: A Buyer's Guide to Maps of Antarctica.

The title is entirely accurate as to the form of the piece, through which device gradually unfolds a history of great delicacy and beauty, which evokes an almost Dunsanian elegiac whimsy. I do not wish to spoil the story by offering specifics, but there are images which will stay with me.

Clarkesworld Magazine

This Plague of Dreaming is not affiliated with either Catherynne Valente or Clarkesworld Magazine, and offers this link simply as a free show of admiration for a wonderful story.

The roller-skate boys sweep down a hill in a shower of autumn leaves. They slice through a police patrol. Blood spatters dead leaves in air.

The screen is exploding in moon craters and boiling silver spots.

"Wild boys very close now."

Darkness falls on the ruined suburbs. A dog barks in the distance.

Dim jerky stars are blowing away across a gleaming empty sky,
the wild boys smile.

We were surprised and gratified this morning to find that This Plague of Dreaming is now listed at Mothers Against Noise (dot org). Unsolicited links feel good.

Nice site. Come for the outrage, leave with a compilation.
